Year 6
Welcome to Year 6!
Year 6 is an important milestone as it marks the final year of primary school, preparing the children for the exciting transition to high school. This year is all about developing independence and taking ownership of learning, as children become more responsible for their progress and outcomes. It is a crucial time where we focus on refining the children’s academic skills, especially in preparation for SATs, which test their knowledge and readiness for the next step in their education.
In addition to academics, Year 6 pupils often take on leadership roles in the school, such as helping to organise and perform in the end-of-year show, allowing them to showcase their talents and demonstrate their growth. It’s a year of personal development, reflection, and looking forward to the new challenges and opportunities that high school will bring.
Please see the termly overviews to find out what your child will be learning each term.

Children took part in an Easter extravaganza at St. James Church, where they enjoyed a meaningful and engaging experience. They received an agape meal of flatbread and pomegranate juice, symbolizing fellowship and remembrance. The children also experienced foot and hand washing, reflecting practices from the Bible, and brought the Easter story to life by acting it out together. To celebrate Jesus’ victory, they each painted an egg, adding a creative and joyful element to the day.
Year 6 took part in an online workshop with Mark McKenzie, who led three engaging sessions about life during the Second World War. The first session explored the Blackout, the Blitz, wardens, gas masks and how bombs were handled during air raids. In the second session, Mark shared the German perspective, drawing on his own family history. He explained what life was like for families living in Germany and how many people were influenced and indoctrinated into supporting Hitler and his regime. The final 45-minute session focused on rationing. Pupils learned why rationing was introduced, which items were rationed, and ways people managed with limited supplies. They also received a ration card and discovered the types of money used when shopping during the war.
Children have been learning about the beginning of the Second World War, including the invasion of Poland in 1939 and how this event led to Britain declaring war. They explored the role of key figures such as Neville Chamberlain, Winston Churchill, and Adolf Hitler, and discussed the impact of their decisions. The children also learned about evacuees and how many families were separated to keep children safe from bombing. They developed their understanding of naval warfare by playing the game Battleships and made connections to real wartime battles at sea. In addition, they explored the emotions people may have felt during the war, the challenges of rationing food and supplies, and the life of Anne Frank, whose diary gives a powerful insight into the experiences of Jewish families during the Holocaust.
This week the children have been exploring the idea that everyone is unique and enjoys different things. Through discussions and shared activities, they reflected on what makes them special and celebrated the differences within our class. To represent this, we created a class collage in the shape of a heart. Each child contributed something that reflects their individual interests, showing that although we may like different things, together we form one respectful and inclusive group that values individuality.
Year 6, revisited their prior learning from KS1 and KS2 by exploring how fossils are formed over time. Earlier learning had introduced children to, the importance of differences between animals for survival, and the basic processes of reproduction in plants and animals. Building on this foundation, pupils applied their understanding to the concept of fossilisation. As a practical activity, pupils created fossils using clay, modelling how plants and animals can leave impressions that are preserved over long periods of time. This hands-on task helped children to recall and consolidate prior knowledge while developing a deeper understanding of how fossils provide evidence of living things from the past. We further carried out an experiment following Charles Darwins theory of finches. We tested which type of beak could pick up certain food sources the best.
Year 6 had an exciting trip to the Ancient High House in Stafford. When the children arrived, they were greeted by Tudor tour guides who were dressed up and acted just like people from the Tudor times. They learnt lots about Tudor life, including clothing, food, money, toileting, hygiene and housing. The children also enjoyed having a go and learning about wattle and daub. It was a fun and interesting day that helped bring history to life.
Y6 were visited by a member of the RNLI education team to talk to us about water safety. We learned how to stay safe near water and what to do in an emergency. They explained the important role of the RNLI and how they rescue people who are in danger at sea. We were shown the different boats and equipment they use, and we even had the chance to try some of the equipment on ourselves. The visit was very interesting and helped us understand how to stay safe around water.
In Year 6, we have been learning about the Tudors and exploring what life was like during this fascinating period of history. We studied the timeline of Tudor monarchs to understand the order of rulers and the impact each had on England. We investigated everyday life in Tudor times and compared it to life today, noticing many differences, especially between the rich and the poor. We learned how wealth affected homes, food, clothing, and opportunities. We also explored the importance of portraits in Tudor times and how they were used to show power and status. Inspired by the artist Hans Holbein, we drew portraits of our classmates in his style. Furthermore, we stained paper to give it an aged appearance and in our computing lessons, we used AI to help create a Tudor poem, combining modern technology with historical inspiration. Following this, we then wrote the poem onto our stained paper using quills and ink, just like they did in Tudor times, bringing the past to life through hands-on learning and creativity.
Our fabulous worship leaders created a hands on lesson today for their class involving decorating a Christmas ornament. The whole lesson was prepared and resourced by Amber and the class thoroughly enjoyed it!
During this topic, we have explored how different variables affect an experiment, we tested how long bread would last when placed in various locations around the school. Working in groups, we conducted the experiment and discussed our predictions about what the bread would look like after four days. We further created our own classification systems where we created questions in order to classify different sweets.
For our fantastic finish, we created our own snowflakes and took part in a STEM lesson where we created a mixture to allow salt crystals to form onto our snowflakes
This week in Art, Year 6 created sketches of Diane Abbott after learning about her inspiring contributions during Black History Month. We learnt about Diane Abbott’s life and her work as the first Black woman elected to Parliament in the UK. We discovered how she has campaigned for equality in education, better healthcare, fair treatment for minority communities, and women’s rights. The class enjoyed combining art with history to celebrate her achievements and understand the importance of standing up for justice and equality.
Year 6 made fruit batteries to see how different fruits can produce electricity to light a bulb or sound a buzzer.
Year 6 created circuits to test how changing batteries and connections affects the buzzer’s volume.
To start our R.E. week, we explored The Story of Creation from the Book of Genesis. We illustrated the seven days of creation, each showing what was made on that particular day. After completing our drawings, we used British Values—such as democracy and mutual respect—to vote for our favourite pieces to go on display.
Year 6 enjoyed an exciting visit to the local library, where they learned about all the different events and activities that take place there. They became official library members and were able to choose and borrow books they were interested in. The children had lots of fun exploring with their friends and were delighted to receive free bookmarks and pencils to take home as a reminder of their trip.
In Year 6, our pupils explored how light changes and how it travels in straight lines. Working in groups, they created their own light sources and used them to demonstrate how rays of light move and reflect. They showed how these rays bounce off surfaces and travel to the eye, helping everyone understand how we are able to see.
To kick start our adventure we explored the American graffiti artist -Keith Haring. Year 6 investigated Keith's life and educational background and examined his style of work to create our own artwork promoting our school values.
24/25 Academic Year Learning
To support their learning about ‘The Tudors’, the children took part in an exciting day trip to the Ancient High House in Stafford — one of the finest Tudor buildings in the country. During the visit, they explored the historic rooms, learned about life in Tudor times, and discovered fascinating stories about the people who once lived there. The hands-on experience helped deepen their understanding of the period and brought their classroom learning to life in a fun and memorable way.
Year 6 took part in this years Inspire project at Lickfield Cathedral. They engaged with the concepts of spirituality, well-being, and courageous advocacy, as well as exploring the beautiful Cathedral. As the pupils engaged with each of the interactive sessions, they were challenged to consider their own and others’ world views.
Whilst revising for our show off week, Y6 have had some pretending to be an animal from the Arctic. The children explored whether having a layer of 'fat' over their skin would keep them warmer in ice cold water.
Year 6 have been on an adventure to the 'Frozen Kingdom'. During this adventure, we have been investigating Antarctica and The Arctic, and diving into the history of The Titanic. Kick starting our exploration of the Titanic, we completed a STEM activity where we designed then made boats out of playdough to test how many passengers (marbles) each boat could hold before sinking like the famous ship iteself.
In Year 6, we explored the science of light and shadows. We learned how light travels and how shadows form, then brought the topic to life by creating our own shadow puppet shows. Using torches, we experimented with light and shadow effects, combining science with creativity and teamwork.
Over four weeks of learning, the children explored life during World War Two. They experienced what life was like at the time through virtual reality and got hands-on in the kitchen by baking and tasting authentic wartime recipes, including carrot cookies and bread pudding.
In Year 6, we explored the story of creation from the Bible, focusing on the account in Genesis where God created the world in seven days. As part of our study, we collaborated on a class artwork to visually represent this process. Each student contributed to illustrating the key events of creation, such as the formation of light, the sky, land, seas, plants, animals, and finally, humanity.
