Maths

Our curriculum is designed to give pupils the key knowledge and skills they need for future learning and for adult life. It provides a strong foundation, enabling every child to grow in confidence, develop a love of learning and be fully prepared for the next stage of their education.

We do this by teaching Maths through the White Rose curriculum, which provides a clear, structured approach to developing children’s mathematical understanding step by step. This is purposely adapted to help pupils with SEND access core knowledge and skills.  This curriculum helps pupils build strong foundations in fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving, ensuring they develop both confidence and resilience in Maths.

As part of our daily routine, we dedicate five minutes each day to practising times tables, recognising how important these are for success in more complex mathematical concepts. To make this engaging, we use the interactive platform TT Rockstars, which motivates children to improve their multiplication skills through fun and competitive challenges. To celebrate progress and encourage perseverance, we also award TT Rockstars certificates for the most improved scores, recognising the effort and achievements of our pupils.

Within Year 3 and Year 6, we are currently trialling a new approach to delivering the national curriculum, where lessons are structured to focus first on developing and securing key mathematical skills before moving into teacher-led reasoning activities. This method allows children to embed core knowledge and fluency in a supportive environment, ensuring they feel confident and well-prepared before tackling more challenging reasoning and problem-solving questions independently. By building this solid foundation, we aim to strengthen pupils’ understanding and enable them to apply their skills more effectively in a range of mathematical contexts.
