Year Five
Class teacher: Mrs Melia
Support Staff: Miss Beeks
Welcome to Year 5!
Year 5 is a year where children really cement their skills as independent learners. They begin to think about the exciting challenges that lie ahead in Year 6 and beyond.
Children in Year 5 study a range of interesting topics such as The Ancient Egyptians and Crime and Punishment through History. They also study what the future world may look like and what our local area has to offer. All the Adventures will spark their curiosity and encourage their research skills.
Children also have many opportunities to show and nurture their creativity, making moving cam mechanisms in DT and creating their own monotypes in Art.
Children continue to study The Big Picture in RE. study exciting units in Science, such as Forces, Changing Materials and Animals including Humans and carry on refining their musical and physical skills in our music and PE lessons.
Year 5 prepares the children for their final chapter as primary school pupils, giving them confidence and building their resilience for when they move on to Year 6.
Please see the termly overviews to find out what your child will be learning each term.

We have been thinking about friendships during our RSHE learning this half term. We thought about how we can show that we are good friends, as well as what we can do if people are not being good friends to us. Can you work out what is happening in our pictures?
In today's RE lesson, we created 'Messages of Hope' posters to show people that they should put their trust in Jesus as he sacrificed his life for us.
Visit to St James' Church
Children took part in an Easter extravaganza at St. James Church, where they enjoyed a meaningful and engaging experience. They received an agape meal of flatbread and pomegranate juice, symbolizing fellowship and remembrance. The children also experienced foot and hand washing, reflecting practices from the Bible, and brought the Easter story to life by acting it out together. To celebrate Jesus’ victory, they each painted an egg, adding a creative and joyful element to the day.
What a fantastic start to our Crime and Punishment Adventure! We visited Shrewsbury Prison in order to develop our understanding of what prison life was really like. We walked around the prison and visited the different cells, learning about who may have once been locked up in there. Our prison guard even locked us away for 5 minutes, although it felt like much longer in the cramped cells! We had a wonderful trip and Year 5 were praised by staff at the prison for their excellent behaviour and manners!
Today we recapped our learning from throughout KS2 so far. We remembered the impact of the Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Tudors, and how they have helped to shape modern day Britain.
We all came to school dressed as a word in order to promote the importance of vocabulary throughout the school. Lots of us enjoyed dressing in our pj's and comfy clothes for the day!
Today we had a CO Workshop delivered by the CO Crew. In this workshop, we learned about the importance of CO safety and how to spot symptoms of CO Poisoning. We now know that CO is a gas that can easily go undetected due to it's lack of smell or ability to be seen. We really enjoyed our workshop!
On Monday 19th January, we had a visit from David at the RNLI. He taught us what RNLI stood for (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) and told us all about water safety. Although we do not live near the ocean, we do have many bodies of water nearby where we need to know how to keep ourselves safe. As well as this, we learned what to do in an emergency, practised calling for help and discussed the meaning of the different flags that can be seen flying on the beach. The children also had lots of fun dressing up like members of the RNLI crew going out on call!
We had our VR Experience and it was so much fun! We explored the pyramids of Giza, visited the Valley of Kings, saw the giant Sphynx and we were even lucky enough to enter one of the tombs! It really helped us to get a better understanding of what it looks like to be stood around the pyramids.
Today we mummified tomatoes and completed our Sensational Start. We started off by learning all about the mummification process and then carried out the steps on a tomato. This was a lot of fun, but also a little bit disgusting! After mummifying our tomatoes, we looked at some timelines of events, carefully putting them into the order in which they happened. Then, we tried to recap as much knowledge as we could remember from what we'd learned about before!
Year 5 wowed us with their wonderful voices and thoughtful prayers in the Christmas Carol Service, reflecting on the true meaning of Christmas.
We have learned about spending money abroad. In our groups we had to make a shopping list, work out how much of our currency we would need to exchange and then see if we had calculated properly, to be able to buy the items on our list.
We had a fantastic morning for our sensational start to our whole school adventure, We paired up with Reception children and built shelters using the Commando Joe equipment. We also enjoyed a variety of winter themed craft activities in the hall before going off on our scavenger hunt. Back in class, Year 5 made up stories using the items we had collected on our walk.
We have been learning about money, how we earn it and spend it. In our drama lesson we learned about all different types of jobs, then we acted them out to see if anybody could guess what we were doing.
As part of our Art for our Once Upon a Snowstorm adventure, we have made forest animals out of clay. Once they have dried completely, we will be painting them.
We had a fantastic time at Brownhills Ormiston Academy. We loved performing on the stage.
We enjoyed our workout circuit before meeting and learning all about how Jemima became a great Judo player!
Year 5 visited Brownhills Library. We were able to browse lots of different books and we also learned about all the facilities available for us to use. We were then able to choose books to borrow and read at home.
fter researching fruits of the rainforest, we made our own fruit kebabs. We substituted fruits of the rainforest for fruits that we can buy here. We finished them off with strawberry sauce, chocolate sauce or whipped cream {some of us got more of this on our faces than in our tummies!) Our kebabs looked great and tasted delicious!
In Science, our adventure was Earth and Space. We learned all about our solar system and the planets within it. We have learned that the sun is at the center of our solar system, and that Earth is just the right distance from the sun to be able to sustain life. We have also found out that night and day is caused by the Earth's rotation, and that we have seasons because of the Earth's tilt as it orbits around the sun. We made our very own 'Solar System in a box.
We are loving our Daily Mile. It is helping us keep fit and giving us great brain breaks to help us concentrate.
Year 5 and 6 have been enjoying PE lessons on the field.
Our Year 5 Panda, Rory, is spending time with all of us and seeing how we show our school values of Love, Adventure and Grow at home. First he spent some time with Miss C. Look out for when he arrives at your house...he is a very active guest!
24/25 Academic Year's Learning
24/25 Academic Year Learning
Following on from our Crime and Punishment adventure, we visited Shrewsbury Prison, which was a working prison until 2013. We learned about it's history,,as well as some of its prisoners, executions and ghosts!
We have revisited our previous learning by locating the oceans and continents on a world map. But first, we had to construct the world map by putting a jigsaw together...harder than you might think!
We spent 2 days on the playground and out on the streets of Clayhanger, refining our cycling skills and learning how to be safe on our bikes.
On Wednesday 9th May, Year 5 completed some STEM challenges. We did this after learning that Design Engineers need to have patience, resiliance and determination. To test these qualities in ourselves, we set about completing 3 challenges: to build a bridge out of spaghetti, to make a cardboard water bomb and to make a balloon kebab.
As our sensational start for our Tomorrow's World Adventure, we became future designers. We worked with our partners to design and make a robot. We then presented our robots to the rest of the class, explaining what their functions and extraordinary abilities were. We had robots that can recycle, shop, make money and even be a wellbeing buddy. Year 5 really enjoyed the activity and showed all their collaborative, creative and problem solving skills off to a very high standard.
The seniors bankers have done a super job of choosing new stock for our school shop. They helped to cost and label the items ready for the rest of the school to spend their tokens.
We had a wonderful visit to St James' Church, where they took part in engaging, hands-on activities that brought the Easter story to life. Through interactive sessions, they explored the key events of Palm Sunday, The Last Supper, and Good Friday in a fun and meaningful way. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to learn, reflect, and deepen their understanding of this important story.
We had great fun singing and acting the story of the discovery of Tutankhamun's Tomb.
The sensational start to our Crime and Punishment Unit involved us all becoming detectives. We studied photographic, forensic and fingerprint evidence, as well as transcripts of police interviews, to work out who the perpetrator of the crime (the theft of Dr Seuss Books from a school library) was.
