Class teacher: Miss Coppock
Welcome to Year 5!
Year 5 is a year where children really cement their skills as independent learners. They begin to think about the exciting challenges that lie ahead in Year 6 and beyond.
Children in Year 5 study a range of interesting topics such as The Ancient Egyptians and Crime and Punishment through History. They also study what the future world may look like and what our local area has to offer. All the Adventures will spark their curiosity and encourage their research skills.
Children also have many opportunities to show and nurture their creativity, making moving cam mechanisms in DT and creating their own monotypes in Art.
Children continue to study The Big Picture in RE. study exciting units in Science, such as Forces, Changing Materials and Animals including Humans and carry on refining their musical and physical skills in our music and PE lessons.
Year 5 prepares the children for their final chapter as primary school pupils, giving them confidence and building their resilience for when they move on to Year 6.
Please see the termly overviews to find out what your child will be learning each term.
We have revisited our previous learning by locating the oceans and continents on a world map. But first, we had to construct the world map by putting a jigsaw together...harder than you might think!
We spent 2 days on the playground and out on the streets of Clayhanger, refining our cycling skills and learning how to be safe on our bikes.
Following on from our Crime and Punishment adventure, we visited Shrewsbury Prison, which was a working prison until 2013. We learned about it's history,,as well as some of its prisoners, executions and ghosts!
On Wednesday 9th May, Year 5 completed some STEM challenges. We did this after learning that Design Engineers need to have patience, resiliance and determination. To test these qualities in ourselves, we set about completing 3 challenges: to build a bridge out of spaghetti, to make a cardboard water bomb and to make a balloon kebab.
As our sensational start for our Tomorrow's World Adventure, we became future designers. We worked with our partners to design and make a robot. We then presented our robots to the rest of the class, explaining what their functions and extraordinary abilities were. We had robots that can recycle, shop, make money and even be a wellbeing buddy. Year 5 really enjoyed the activity and showed all their collaborative, creative and problem solving skills off to a very high standard.
We had a wonderful visit to St James' Church, where they took part in engaging, hands-on activities that brought the Easter story to life. Through interactive sessions, they explored the key events of Palm Sunday, The Last Supper, and Good Friday in a fun and meaningful way. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to learn, reflect, and deepen their understanding of this important story.
The seniors bankers have done a super job of choosing new stock for our school shop. They helped to cost and label the items ready for the rest of the school to spend their tokens.
We had great fun singing and acting the story of the discovery of Tutankhamun's Tomb.
The sensational start to our Crime and Punishment Unit involved us all becoming detectives. We studied photographic, forensic and fingerprint evidence, as well as transcripts of police interviews, to work out who the perpetrator of the crime (the theft of Dr Seuss Books from a school library) was.
