Reception

Welcome to Reception!
In Reception, we aim to build strong foundations to support children's learning throughout their school life- all whilst having lots of fun! For a lot of children, Reception is their introduction to life at Holy Trinity and we therefore aim to make this as exciting as possible! Life in Reception is a balance of introducing children to essential learning such as Phonics and Maths, whilst also empowering them with choosing time to develop their confidence, curiosity and imagination. Throughout their time in Reception, children are inspired to be independent and resilient, as well as being excellent collaborators and communicators. By nurturing these skills, a child's time in Reception ensures that they leave as a well-rounded learner who is ready to thrive in Year 1.
Throughout the year, our learning takes us on lots of adventures. We start the year celebrating all the things that make us special in our ‘Magical Me’ adventure. In Autumn 2, we celebrate our differences by learning about celebrations across the world in our ‘Sparkle and Shine’ adventure. When we return to school after the Christmas break, we immerse ourselves in stories and traditional tales in our ‘Once Upon a Time’ adventure. After this, we have our ‘Only We Can Save the World’ adventure where we consider how we can become superheroes to save our planet! We then kickstart our Summer term with our ‘All Things Great and Small’ adventure where we learn about animals and life cycles. We end our year in Reception with our ‘Ticket to Ride’ adventure where we learn about our local area and how this may differ to areas across the world. What a busy, yet fun-filled year of learning!

We have been busy this month exploring our new environment and making new friends.
In RE, we have been learning about God's Creation. We have learnt about each day of the universes creation and have used our play dough to make some of the things that god created. Our favourite was creating some of the animals!
As part of our Magical Me adventure, we have been learning about zones of regulation. We have been thinking about our feelings and how our faces might look when we are experiencing these emotions.
As part of our Magical Me adventure, we have been celebrating the things that make us unique, as well as our similarities and differences. We have worked really hard to create self portraits and are really proud of them!
We loved our first dough disco! We danced to the music and moulded our dough into different shapes to help make our fingers super strong!
We had lots of fun exploring the library. We had a story time with the animals and chose a book to take home to share with our grown ups!
We worked really hard during our first PE lesson. We explored different movements, developed our understanding of finding a safe space and did the hokey cokey, which was our favourite part!
We have had lots of fun during out first day in Reception. We have found our new classroom, met our new teachers and made lots of new friends!
24/25 Academic Year learning
Today we have had our last day in Reception. We had fun on the bouncy castle, playing together and have enjoyed looking through pictures of our time in Reception. We are super excited about our next adventure in Year 1 (which Miss GD keeps telling us we will be fantastic at)!
We have been celebrating our time in Reception and all the amazing memories we have made at our Graduation!
This week, we have been showing our school value 'love' to care for our environment. We have been watering our plants, repotting some so they have more room to grow and observing their changes.
On our last day of Science Week, we completed an experiment to represent a rocket launch. We made predictions about what we thought would happen and decided that we would change the amount of mints each time to see how this would impact the results. We loved the experiment and had lots of fun observing, Miss GD and Mrs Gunn did too!
Today, revisiting our previous learning in our 'Only We Can Save the World' adventure, we have used recycled materials to make rockets. We have also explored number bonds to 5 and our understanding of the planets. We have also been thinking about what we would take to space!
Day 3 of Science Week has been very exciting! This morning we received an envelope from the International Space Centre that contained certificates for our astronaut training. In Maths, we have made space rockets and have used positional language to describe our rockets. We have used jaffa cakes to explore different phases of the moon.
This morning we have completed our astronaut training. We had lots of fun making space shapes, showing our excellent listening skills and moon walking/ jumping. We have considered the texture of the moon and painted to show this. We have also worked hard to develop our fine motor skills by cutting out the planets and ordering them from to smallest.
On Monday, we discovered some mystery items in our class room. After lots of observing and discussing, we decided that the mystery items were moon rocks. We then made predictions about which materials we believed would be best suited to make our own moon rocks. We then tested our predictions and used the favoured material to make our own moon rocks.
As part of our 'Ticket to Ride' adventure, we have been practicing our map skills. We have followed a map around our school too!
We had lots of fun at sports day! We had worked so hard during our PE lessons to prepare for our 4 races. we also enjoyed cheering on our friends!
As part if our 'Ticket to Ride' adventure, we have been learning about life in different continents. We have tasted the fruits from the story 'Handa's Surprise'. We recognised that some of these fruits were different to the fruits that we ate the most. We enjoyed trying the passionfruit and thought it tasted like sweets. We had lots of fun making Orange smiles too!
We invited the special people in our lives into school. We performed a song to them, said a prayer and then had lots of fun completing different actviities with them. We particularly enjoyed creating dinosaur shadows and drawing them with our special people.
We have been learning about the UK, as well as where we live. We know that we live in England and England has a King. We have enjoyed making our own crowns, decorating flags and thinking about what we would o if we were King or Queen for the day!
As part of our 'Ticket to Ride' adventure, we have had lots of fun playing in our new role play area. We have been helping each other to find our favourite holiday in the Travel Agents and then helping each other through the Airport. Our favourite part has been driving the plane and checking each others passports and tickets. We gave been using key vocabulary 'adventure' and 'journey' throughout.
To develop our understanding of the world, we have been planting flowers in our outdoor area. We are hoping that these flowers will attract minibeasts into our garden.
As part of our Summer1 adventure, we have been learning about minibeasts. We have been exploring our environment to search for minibeasts and observe their similarities and differences.
We had lots of fun visiting the farm to conclude our Summer 1 adventure. We loved being farmers for the day and enjoyed caring for the animals we have been learning about at school. We especially loved digging for worms and milking a goat!
As part of our adventure ‘All Creatures Great and Small’, we have been learning about the life cycle of a chicken. Reception had lots of fun caring for the chicks and were super brave when holding and stroking them!
As part of our ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ adventure, we have been learning about life cycles. We have shared the story of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and have tasted the fruits the caterpillar ate. After we tasted them, we shared with each other the reasons we liked or disliked the fruit and identified our favourite. In Maths, we identified that strawberries were the most popular and plums were the least popular.
As part of our ‘Only We Can Save the World’ adventure, the children had lots of fun turning old plastic bottles into beautiful flowers! This creative activity helped them learn about recycling, caring for the environment, and using their imaginations to give new life to everyday materials.
We had a fantastic time celebrating World Book Day! Children came to school dressed as their favourite book characters or in their cosy PJs, ready to enjoy a day full of stories. We shared our favourite books and even gave book reviews—building confidence and communication skills along the way!
To develop our understanding of the world, we have recently been learning about our every changing environment. We went on a spring walk around our school to identify things we might see in Spring. We had lots of fun collaborating in our pairs to find the items on our scavenger hunt, we especially liked looking for minibeasts and spiders webs!
We have been super busy during our choosing time. We have been working hard to develop our collaboration, resilience and self confidence, all whilst having lots of fun!
We had so much fun recycling old cereal boxes into our very own monsters! The children explored colour mixing through painting and let their imaginations run wild as they designed and named their unique creations. A perfect mix of creativity, sustainability, and fun!
We love exploring our environment during choosing time! It’s a wonderful opportunity for the children to develop important skills like resilience, independence, and collaboration—all while having lots of fun through play and discovery.
We’ve had a great time exploring doubles in our learning, especially when creating our very own doubles butterflies! This fun, hands-on activity helped us understand the concept of doubling in a creative and memorable way.
In RE, we’ve been learning about the significance of Palm Sunday and why it’s such an important event for Christians. The children explored the meaning of the palm cross and how it reminds people of Jesus' arrival in Jerusalem. It’s been a thoughtful and engaging part of our learning journey.
Reception had so much fun during their Balanceability sessions! They grew in confidence on their bikes while developing balance, coordination, and independence. The children were so proud to receive their Balanceability certificates during celebration assembly—it was a fantastic achievement for all!
We had a fantastic time visiting the Role Play Village! The children loved exploring a variety of real-life environments, including a campsite, vets, doctors, café, shop, and construction site. It was a brilliant opportunity to spark imagination, develop communication skills, and enjoy learning through play.
Our Reception class had an amazing time exploring the snow! Their smiles say it all — a day full of fun, laughter, and unforgettable memories. A perfect way to learn through nature and experience the joy of the seasons!
